Being Arrested Led James Dunn to Being a Motivational Coach. And a Damn Good One at That!
I am so excited to introduce my friend James Dunn to the podcast! James is a motivational mindset coach and podcast host, who turned his life around after being arrested for attempted armed robbery at 17 years old. You heard that right! Sometimes things happen in our lives that can create a voice of self doubt, questioning and not believing in what we are capable of. Well James is passionate about silencing that voice and helping people get out of their own way, taking them from unsure, to unstoppable! Tune in to hear his powerful story of transformation and how he got to where he is today!
One thing I also love about James is his authenticity, so if you’re a Mama listening to this episode and your kiddos are around, you might want to put the air pods in for this one, because we do let a few F bombs fly and even chat about why in the episode! So let’s dive into this juicy episode!

Staying Authentically You
James and I both believe in staying true to your honest and authentic self, and sometimes that includes dropping a few F bombs here and there! Does this come with censorship from others and perhaps repelling them from your content or having you at a speaking event? Sometimes yes! But at the end of the day, all it means is that you aren’t for those people, and the right people will find you!
The Journey of Transformation
James shares his story of growing up adopted, in a small town and with an alcoholic father, slowly feeling like he was never going to have the life he wanted. What started out as the need for attention, even in a negative way, would eventually escalate to other crimes and his attempted armed robbery arrest. Seeing the disappointment on the faces of his parents was only the first small nudge in deciding that this wasn’t the path he was meant to be on. It would still take a number of years later- the birth of his first child, getting the opportunity to work in a business that was focused on setting goals and personal development and 2 divorces later, until James would really begin to change his life. He realized that he was essentially the common denominator in his problems and that something was missing. He realized he wasn’t doing the work! He wasn’t implementing what he was learning from great speakers like Tony Robbins and wanted to get in rooms with people who were sharing stories of overcoming challenges just like himself. You can have all the right advice and wisdom, but until you can take action, implement it and put in the work, you won’t see any changes.
Mindset Change
I loved the metaphor that James shared about how in life, even in our businesses and podcasts, you’ve got to treat it like a marathon. You’ve got to be in it for the long haul. “But you've got to start off with a sprint of getting the right mindset that you are in this for the long haul, not the immediate satisfaction of a million downloads.” We can get so caught up with having the numbers, views, clients and gigs instantly, that when we don’t, we’re left with disappointment, doubt and the desire to give up. When you can let go of the need to have immediate results, you can free up so much energy to keep going. At the same time, you need that experience and practice in order to be ready for the bigger things ahead. Like a marathon, you are slowly building yourself up so when you want to run longer distances or get those clients and reach the goals you’ve always dreamed of, you are ready for it!
I hope James’ story inspires you to work through your own limiting beliefs and what could be holding you back from living the incredible life you deserve! If this episode resonated with you, share it with a friend you think might need to hear it right now! 🥰
